Perhaps the epitome of post-modern cuteness, Komaneko – The Curious Cat (a.k.a. Komadori Eiga Komaneko) is about a stop-motion animated cat who is making a stop-motion animated film. Created by Goda Tsuneo, Komaneko follows Koma-chan as she attempts to make her very first movie with an 8mm camera and an array of handmade dolls and sets. Unfortunately, various frustrating obstacles get in her way, including a persistent fly, a trouble-making visitor, and that pesky thing called gravity.

Komaneko began as a five-minute exhibition short to introduce stop-motion animation, but the adorable little cat attracted so much attention, it charmed its way into a feature-length release, consisting of five short episodes. Clearly a product of love and labor, the shorts delight with their pleasant atmosphere, gentle humor, beautiful visuals, and universal sentiments. The shorts are dialogue-free, so Japanese-language – or any language – ability is not necessary to enjoy the stories. Perfect for viewers of all ages, Komaneko is a charming ode to animation and filmmaking.

Despite making a splash in 1999 with Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, Okiura Hiroyuki stepped away from the director’s chair for over a decade. Now, he has finally reunited with Production I.G. with A Letter to Momo, a gentle fantasy comedy about a teenage girl s friendship with three kind goblins. The creator of the original story concept and the film’s storyboards, Okiura worked closely with illustrator Ando Masashi (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) and art director Ono Hiroshi (Kiki’s Delivery Service) on the film’s hand-drawn animation design. However, A Letter to Momo is also more intimate than the typical Ghibli fantasy, focusing on the bittersweet emotional journey of its heroine to get over the death of her father.

After the death of her father, 13-year-old Momo is forced to move to her mother’s old family home on Shio Island. Left with only the beginning of an unfinished letter from her father, Momo has been trying to decipher the meaning of the words while secretly resenting herself for their final argument before his death. One day, Momo starts to notice things going missing and strange noises around the house. During her investigation, she discovers that the noises are caused by three goblins, led by Iwa (voiced by Nishi Toshiyuki). After getting over her initial fear of the three, they end up forming a special friendship that helps Momo get over her grief..

While Miyazaki Hayao is the undisputed master of grand, sweeping animated epics, Studio Ghibli co-founder Takahata Isao excels in sensitive storytelling and delicately capturing human emotions and experiences. In films like Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, and Only Yesterday, the acclaimed director shows his ability to express a range of sentiments and experiences, and astutely portray the bittersweet changes of life. In his films, one can always find a sense of quiet sincerity and social responsibility. His 1999 work My Neighbors the Yamadas, his last feature film to date, is the simplest, and perhaps most charming, offering to come from Studio Ghibli.

Based on Ishii Hisaichi’s comic strip Nono-chan, the film details a series of amusing episodes in the lives of the quirky, yet normal Yamada family. Cooking curry again, getting lost at the mall, studying for exams, gossiping at a restaurant, visiting the hospital, conversations, arguments, memories – the film winkingly and meanderingly observes the daily goings of the family, with a gentle touch of humor and humanity. Retaining the comic’s aesthetic, the animation is rendered in simple strokes and bathed in soft colors, with back-to-the-basics line drawings that are mischievously expressive. My Neighbors the Yamadas offers a completely different visual experience than other Studio Ghibli films, while retaining that same Ghibli magic.

Blu-ray Edition comes with a 45-minute documentary originally made for Nippon Television, storyboards, dubbing script, and promotion video. In addition to the original Japanese soundtrack, the Blu-ray also includes the English, German, Korean, and Mandarin dubs of the film..
