Cello Hiki no Gauche (Gauche the Cellist) (Japan Version – English Subtitles)

Based on a classic Japanese story by author Miyazawa Kenji, Cello Hiki no Gauche (or Gauche the Cellist) tells the serene tale of young Gauche, a professional cellist who has been deemed the poorest member of his struggling orchestra. With 10 days left before a very important concert, Gauche practices away into the night – except he gets bothered nightly by forest animals who show up on his doorstep. But these animals have a goal: to give Gauche a true understanding of music, so that he can play the cello with all his heart.

Produced in 1982, Cello Hiki no Gauche is perhaps less familiar to English-speaking fans of director Takahata Isao. One of Ghibli Studios’ most stalwart contributors, Takahata was responsible for the animated classics Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, and My Neighbors the Yamadas, among others. Cello Hiki no Gauche retains its charm years after its initial release through assured storytelling, simple character designs, universal themes, and of course a rich classical music score. Taneyamagahara no Yoru (Japan Version)

In honor of the 110th anniversary of the birth of writer Miyazawa Kenji, Studio Ghibli is releasing two short films based on the writer’s work. Gauche the Cellist, a 1982 production directed by Takahata Isao, is being re-released, and will be joined by a brand new work based on a 1924 play by Miyazawa: Taneyamagahara no Yoru (“Night of Taneyamagahara”). This 27 minute film marks the directorial debut of background artist Oga Kazuo, and features the original Japanese language track plus standard and regional Japanese subtitles.

Miyazawa’s works contain many themes that are similar to those in Studio Ghibli’s films, including a focus on man and his evolving relationship with nature. “Taneyamagahara” refers to a mountain in Japan’s Kitakami mountain range, and was a favorite spot of the author, whose renown in Japan has only grown since his death in 1933 at the young age of 37. Another famous work by Miyazawa was Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru, which was adapted into the 1985 animated film Night on the Galactic Railroad..

A monumental achievement in the world of Japanese animation, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is considered by many to be Miyazaki Hayao’s masterpiece. With the coexistence of humans and nature as its central theme, this fantastic tale is a sobering vision of what could be our own future. After an apocalyptic war known as the “Seven Days of Fire,” the civilizations that humans had prized so highly have been obliterated. One thousand years after the war, the remnants of humanity eke out their existence in a small area of land, threatened on all sides by the “Sea of Corruption,” a vast forest of fungi and insects.

One evening, a gigantic transport vessel hailing from the Kingdom of Torumekia crashes into the Valley of the Wind – a small pocket of land protected by ocean breezes from the deadly “miasma” gas that blows across the land. The people of the valley, under the direction of Princess Nausicaa, work to clean up the wreckage of the vessel, and in its remains they discover the devastating weapon used to decimate humanity in the ancient war. Soon, the valley is attacked by Kushana, princess of Torumekia, and its inhabitants unwillingly become entangled in a war between Torumekia and the city of Pejite….
