After the first two films recapped the events in the original anime series, the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series now has its first original feature film with Rebellion! Set after the events of the previous films, Rebellion sees Madoka and the other magical girls trapped in an alternate world battling creatures named Nightmares. To escape the alternate world, the girls must band together and help Madoka retrieve her lost memories. Debuting at the top of the box office, Rebellion set the record for being the highest-grossing film based on a late night anime in Japan.

Based on the first animated series, the film restructures the story slightly from the animated series in order to fit everything in the 130-minute running time. Nevertheless, the film still follows the adventures of the nine-year-old Takamachi Nonoha, who becomes caught in an intergalactic battle over an ancient artifact called “Jewel Seeds”. After learning how to retrieve the seeds from injured mage Yuno, Nonoha runs into another obstacle in her quest when she meets another powerful mage named Fate Testarossa.

As the baby now named Kaguya – quickly matures, the woodcutter finds gold in other bamboo stalks and uses them to buy his adopted daughter’s way into becoming a princess. Growing into a gorgeous princess, Kaguya attracts the attention of many suitors, but she laments her lack of freedom and begins to question the purpose of living a life behind closed doors.
