Opposites attract in TVB’s lighthearted 1999 costume drama Colourful Life starring Frankie Lam and Annie Man. Aired during the Lunar New Year period, this humorous crowd-pleaser follows the comings, goings, and feuding of a wealthy merchant family in Tang Dynasty China. Petite actress Annie Man breaks through with her first TVB leading role after recently jumping from ATV, while Frankie Lam’s likeable turn as the good husband with a sassy wife paved the way for his later role in Virtues of Harmony. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the drama though is the addition of Ronald Cheng to the cast in his first comedic acting role. His hilarious performance was a big hit with the audience, helping to revitalize his career and send him on the path toward silver-screen funnyman.
