After making two critically acclaimed short films, animation director Shinkai Makoto makes his first feature-length film with the ambitious fantasy romance The Place Promised in Our Early Days. The sci-fi espionage romance takes place in an alternate reality in which Japan has been split into two – one occupied by the United States and one occupied by the Soviet Union – and it follows three childhood friends who become part of a major civil war between the two Japans. Even with his ambitious premise, Shinkai continues to explore some of his favorite themes in Place, such as the longing for those fleeting moments in our youth.

Hiroki, Takuya, and Sayuri are teenagers living in Aomori, located at the northern edge of the formerly US-occupied Southern Japan. Everyday, they look north at the Soviet-occupied Northern Japan and the mysterious Hokkaido Tower. One day, Hiroki and Takuya find a crashed drone plane, and they start to restore it with hopes of flying it to Hokkaido Tower with Sayuri. However, Sayuri suddenly disappears long before the plane is done. Three years later, Hiroki and Takuya – still haunted by Sayuri’s disappearance – have parted ways, with one continuing high school in Tokyo and the other working as a physicist in a project funded by the American government. When Takuya gets involved with an underground group aiming at the reunification of Japan, he discovers that Sayuri is now taking part in a research involving the Hokkaido Tower in the north.

Renowned animation house Studio Ghibli and director Miyazaki Hayao offer a different kind of coming-of-age tale with Kiki’s Delivery Service. Based on the children’s book by Kadono Eiko, Miyazaki’s much-beloved youth romance follows the journey of a 13-year-old witch-in-training who goes to the big city and becomes an entrepreneur by starting her own delivery service. While the story is pure fantasy, Kiki’s Delivery Service is an enchanting, but down-to-earth tale about finding confidence in yourself and the magic of young love. After winning multiple awards in Japan, Kiki’s also set a new record for the highest-grossing animated theatrical release in Japanese cinema history – until Miyazaki beat his own record three years later with Porco Rosso.

When a witch reaches 13 years old, she must go off and live alone for a year. For her training, Kiki takes off to the port city Koriko with her best friend, a black cat named Jiji. After a difficult start, Kiki manages to make friends and even start a delivery service that takes advantage of her flying abilities. She is also pursued by Tombo, a teenager who is an aviation enthusiast and intrigued by Kiki’s powers. One day, in the biggest crisis of her young life, Kiki suddenly loses her flying powers and the ability to talk to Jiji. Will Kiki be able to get her powers back?

Featuring the voice talents of Mcdull regulars Sandra Ng, Anthony Wong and The Pancakes, as well as piano maestro Li Yundi, this outing by the iconic cartoon takes a closer look at Mcdull’s relationship with his wonderfully headstrong mother.

Courted by the FBI, Scotland Yard and the like, Bobby Mak is often referred to as the most revered private detective since Sherlock Holmes. When asked about his awe-inspiring achievements, Bobby says that everything began with his mum, Mrs. Mak.

As a child, Bobby Mak was known as Mcdull. Although Mcdull wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, his mother was a different story. Her astounding intelligence and resourcefulness enabled her to, for example, simultaneously run more than six businesses from a space of less than 100 square feet. Mcdull and his mother lived together happily during Mcdull’s childhood, but things began to change as Mcdull got older. A distance that never existed before began to grow between him and his mother…
