In early Tang Dynasty, when China was in one of the golden eras of her long history, dance and music was not only the prime entertainment for the royal family, but also a means of climbing up the social ladder for commoners. It is because the performers who excel at the competition held in Chang’an will be entitled to a life of luxury in the royal court. In his escape from the law after killing a corrupt official, wandering musician Tai Ming But (Bobby Auyeung) resorts to stealing the identity of Kiu Bo Lung (Evergreen Mak), whom he presumed dead, as the new director of the royal performing arts academy, Cheung Lai Yuen. Having got himself disfigured and his memory lost in the near-fatal accident, Kiu adopts the name Ko Yan and begins his new life as a chef. But as fate would have it, Tai and Ko cross paths again in Chang’an, not knowing each other’s real identity. Tai recognizes Ko’s extraordinary gift in music and invites him to work in the academy. Meanwhile, in an attempt to break off with Kiu’s past, Tai cancels the engagement with Kiu’s arranged fianc e Bin Yuk Yin (Linda Chung), who furiously plots to enter the academy as a dancer and approach him with vengeance in mind. At Cheung Lai Yuen, she befriends fellow dancer Lei Tsoi Shan (Myolie Wu), but the fierce competition for the top performer honor only compounds their already complicated relationships with the real and the fake Kiu Bo Lungs….
