Four years in the making, The Tibetan Dog is the highly anticipated Japan-China co-production created by the renowned Madhouse animation studio. The animated feature is handled by director Kojima Masayuki (Monster) and producer Maruyama Masao (Summer Wars) based on the best-selling novels by Yang Zhijun and the original character artworks by manga artist Urasawa Naoki (20th Century Boys). The voice cast notably features alan, a Japan-based Chinese singer of Tibetan descent, who also sings the theme song.

An official selection at the 2011 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the film follows young boy Tian Jing, who moves to Tibet to live with his estranged father after his mother passes away. One day, Jing rescues a golden-haired Tibetan Mastiff and decides to keep him at home, christening him Duoji Yongzhi. With the help of his friend, Jing sneaks Duoji out to the snowy mountains, where they encounter the real culprit…

After making two critically acclaimed short films, animation director Shinkai Makoto makes his first feature-length film with the ambitious fantasy romance The Place Promised in Our Early Days. The sci-fi espionage romance takes place in an alternate reality in which Japan has been split into two – one occupied by the United States and one occupied by the Soviet Union – and it follows three childhood friends who become part of a major civil war between the two Japans. Even with his ambitious premise, Shinkai continues to explore some of his favorite themes in Place, such as the longing for those fleeting moments in our youth.

Hiroki, Takuya, and Sayuri are teenagers living in Aomori, located at the northern edge of the formerly US-occupied Southern Japan. Everyday, they look north at the Soviet-occupied Northern Japan and the mysterious Hokkaido Tower. One day, Hiroki and Takuya find a crashed drone plane, and they start to restore it with hopes of flying it to Hokkaido Tower with Sayuri. However, Sayuri suddenly disappears long before the plane is done. Three years later, Hiroki and Takuya – still haunted by Sayuri’s disappearance – have parted ways, with one continuing high school in Tokyo and the other working as a physicist in a project funded by the American government. When Takuya gets involved with an underground group aiming at the reunification of Japan, he discovers that Sayuri is now taking part in a research involving the Hokkaido Tower in the north.

Nominated for Best Animated Picture at the Japan Academy Awards, Summer with Coo (a.k.a. Kappa No Coo To Natsuyasumi) is a mellow crowd-pleaser that appeals to all ages. Gently directed by Hara Keiichi, best known for his work on the Crayon Shin-chan and Doraemon TV series and films, Summer with Coo depicts the friendship between a boy and his pet kappa. A creature of Japanese folkore, the kappa is a river imp with a ravenous appetite and special powers; in its cuddly form, it’s often depicted as looking somewhere between a turtle and a frog, as in the case of this film. Five years in the making, Summer with Coo was met with great reviews and word of mouth for its realistic characters, strong themes, and heartwarming story.

Small-town boy Uehara Koichi finds a curious-looking stone at the riverbank one day and takes it home. After he washes off the stone, much to Koichi’s surprise, little arms and legs pop out, and then a green head. It turns out that Koichi has brought home a young kappa that has been dozing for 300 years. Koichi names the timid, mischievous creature Coo – after the first sound it makes – and the Ueharas happily welcome the kappa into their chaotic family. The best of friends, Koichi and Coo play away the summer days together, but as time passes, Coo becomes increasingly lonely and sad, a lone kappa in the human world. Koichi and Coo decide to go off on their own to a town in northern Japan where it’s said kappa still ply the rivers..
