Director Hur Jin Ho addresses the two unavoidable facts of life in his latest film: we all want to be happy, and we all die eventually. Young Soo (Hwang Jung Min), a freewheeler who runs a nightclub, is met with life’s several crossroads all at once. Telling all his friends that he is going to study abroad, he checks into House of Hope, a home for incurables in the quite, secluded countryside. An eight-year resident and an employee of the rehab center, Eun Hee (Lim Soo Jung) suffers from a severe lung illness, though not a glimpse of sickness appears in her attitude. Always cheerful and optimistic, she finds Young Soo’s aloofness quite charming. Drawn to her strength, Young Soo also falls for her and the two become inseparable, even finding a place of their own. One year rolls by and while Eun Hee seems endlessly content, the monotone of daily routines and Eun Hee’s ailing condition begin to weigh Young Soo down. The Widow (1955)
The only film from female director Park Nam Ok, the melodrama The Widow offers a different perspective of the female experience in postwar Korea, and a woman’s struggle between duty and desire. Raising a daughter alone after the war, widow Shin (Lee Min Ja) is much indebted to her late husband’s friend Seong Jin (Shin Dong Hun) but resists his romantic advances. Instead, she falls for Taek (Lee Taek Kyun), who is carrying on an affair with Seong Jin’s jealous wife (Park Yeong Suk). Shin is willing to give up everything for Taek, but his heart changes again when his girlfriend returns.

The Flower in Hell (1958)
Directed by legendary filmmaker Shin Sang Ok, The Flower in Hell is set in the red light district near a US army base. Young Sik (Kim Hak) steals US military goods and sells them in the black market. He hopes to score big, and then bring prostitute Sonya (Choi Eun Hee) back to his hometown. Sonya, however, has her eyes set on Young Sik’s younger brother Dong Sik (Cho Hae Won).

The Money (1958)
Directed by Kim So Dong, The Money is about a poor farmer whose bid for a better life ends up bringing calamity to his family. At the urging of loan shark Eok Jo (Choi Nam Hyun), Bong Su (Kim Seung Ho) sells his cows to start a business but he loses everything to a conman (No Kyung Hee). Bong Su accidentally kills Eok Jo in a fight and takes his money, and the police trace the crime back to Bong Su’s son.

A Drifting Story (1960)
Directed by Kwon Yeong Sun, the melodrama A Drifting Story follows the trials and tribulations of a single mother who dares to love. Hyun Hee (Mun Jeong Suk) makes a living running a coffee house.
