Written by Ang Eng Tee and directed by Zhang Rongmin, the 34-episode drama serial depicts the life of the Peranakan and their ethnic culture. Peranakan (or “Baba-Nyonya”) refers to the descendents of early Chinese immigrants in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, where “Baba” means men and “Nyonya” women. When it was broadcast in 1985, the female lead of the drama, Barbara Yung, committed suicide and left her fans at a young age of 26. Famous for her captivating performance as Wong Yung in the well-known costume series, the Legend of the Condor Heroes, Barbara Yung has made only nine TV series in her ephemeral acting career.
