A classic tale of love, betrayal and the pain of a woman scorned, Liang Yusheng’s The Bride with White Hair has been told in multiple films and television series, including Ronny Yu’s 1993 hit film of the same name. Now, director Jacob Cheung (A Battle of Wits) brings the story to a new generation of wuxia fans with White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom. Superstars Fan Bingbing (Shaolin, Buddha Mountain) and Huang Xiaoming (American Dreams in China) co-star as a pair of star-crossed lovers caught in an era of turmoil and war during the Ming Dynasty. To bring this story to life in 3D, Cheung even recruited the help of director Tsui Hark, one of the pioneers of 3D technology in Chinese cinema, as the film’s artistic consultant.

Near the end of the Ming Dynasty, Wudang’s Zhuo Yihang (Huang Xiaoming), as the future leader of the sect, is assigned to present the Red Clous to the Emperor as royal tribute. However, the Emperor dies soon after consuming the Bolus, and Yihang is set up as the murderer. Escaping to the northwestern border, Yihang encounters Lian Nicheng (Fan Bingbing), the leader of a group of bandits out to wipe out corrupt government officials. During a battle, Nicheng rescues Yihang and takes him to her home in Moonlight Village, dubbed as a terrorist base by the government. Over time, Yihang comes to understand Nicheng’s noble quest, and the two fall in love. The celebrated life and tragic death of famed silent film star Ruan Ying Lu is told in Stanley Kwan’s award-winning docudrama Center Stage. Also known as Actress, the film covers a period from 1929 to 1935, when Ruan Ling Yu (Maggie Cheung) ruled the screen as the undisputed goddess of Chinese cinema. But in private, Ruan was a rebellious figure, who bristled against the rigid societal conventions of her time. Ruan took her own life at the age of 25 amidst tabloid criticism and controversy, but her legend is immortalized in Stanley Kwan’s loving, engrossing work. Utilizing archival footage from Ruan Ling Yu’s early films, interview segments with her contemporaries and modern actors, re-enactments of select Ruan Ling Yu performances by Maggie Cheung, and dramatized sequences depicting the turbulent last years of her life, Center Stage paints a complex, structurally enthralling portrait of a beloved artist of the cinema.

Maggie Cheung turns in the performance of a lifetime as Ruan Ling Yu, earning her the Best Actress in the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival that cemented her reputation as quite possibly the leading Asian actor of her generation. The film also dominated the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards by winning 5 awards in 1992. In Chungking Express, director Wong Kar Wai delivered a breezy, effervescent look at two cops falling in and out of love amidst Hong Kong’s alienating urban cityscape. Fallen Angels takes the styles and themes presented in Chungking Express and pushes them even further, delving deeper into Hong Kong’s sleepless nights to find characters who’ve truly fallen from grace. Leon Lai is a disaffected hitman who enters a relationship of convenience with a heartbroken flirt (Karen Mok), while his emotionally damaged partner (Michelle Reis) pines for him silently.
