From producer Wei Te Sheng and his Seediq Bale star Umin Boya (making his film directorial debut) comes Kano, a rousing tale of courage, beating the odds and good sportsmanship. Based on the inspiring true story of Taiwan’s greatest baseball team, Kano chronicles the journey of a small-town high school baseball team from underdogs to champions during the Japanese colonial period. Leading a young cast that includes breakout star Tsao Yu Ning, Nagase Masatoshi (Twilight Samurai) gives a commanding performance as a stern baseball coach who leads and inspires the team into history. Nominated for six Golden Horse Awards (including Best Picture) and the winner of the festival’s Audience Award, Kano is an inspiring blockbuster epic about the glory of sports.

Kano is set in the 1930s in the city of Chiayi (or Kagi at the time), known for a flourishing agricultural industry. However, the baseball team of Kagi Agriculture and Forestry Public School (abbreviated as “Kano”) comprised of students of Taiwanese, aboriginal and Japanese origins suffers from a losing record and a lack of motivation. Newly arrived from Japan to teach bookkeeping at the school, Kondo (Nagase Masatoshi) is recruited to become the team’s new coach. A former baseball player who has quit the game for good, Kondo eventually agrees and puts the team on a strict training regimen. Inspired by their new coach’s enthusiasm, the boys start winning games and setting their eyes on the Koshien tournament, the Holy Grail of Japanese high school baseball.

Based on the popular novel by Tong Hua, the blockbuster period series Bu Bu Jing Xin (a.k.a. Startling By Each Step) is the most highly anticipated Chinese drama of 2011. The latest series from renowned director/producer Lee Kwok Lap, Bu Bu Jing Xin steps back in time to the romantic and political upheavals of the Qing court. A frequent star of Lee Kwok Lap dramas, Cecilia Liu Shishi plays a young woman who jumps back in time to the reign of Kangxi, and gets drawn into the ascension struggle among the royal princes. Both a heartrending romance and a historical drama, Bu Bu Jing Xin uses its fantasy premise and fictional heroine to observe and affect well-known figures and episodes in Qing Dynasty history.

Bu Bu Jing Xin has inspired a fervent following for its outstanding cast of royal princes. Taiwan actor-singer Nicky Wu stars as the stone-faced 4th Prince who eventually rises to the throne as Yongzheng, while TVB actor Kevin Cheng, collaborating with Lee Kwok Lap again 12 years after The Legendary Siblings, is the genteel 8th Prince destined for tragedy. The other members of the royal family are Han Dong as the scheming 9th Prince, Ye Zuxin as the simple-minded 10th Prince, Lee Kwok Lap regular Yuan Hong as the unbridled 13th Prince, and newcomer Lin Gengxin as the loyal 14th Prince. Veteran Hong Kong actor Damian Lau reigns over all as Emperor Kangxi.

After an argument with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Zhang Xiao (Cecilia Liu) rushes out into the street, and gets electrocuted in an accident. When she regains consciousness, she finds herself in the Qing Dynasty. She is now teenaged Ruo Xi, the willful younger sister of the 8th Prince’s consort (Annie Liu). Ruo Xi enters the Forbidden City, and becomes a trusted servant of the Emperor (Damian Lau) as the years pass by. Knowing what happens to everyone historically, Ruo Xi hopes to stay detached from palace politics, but she gets romantically entangled with both the 8th Prince (Kevin Cheng) and the 4th Prince (Nicky Wu), whose competition for the throne leads inevitably to danger and tragedy. Staying true to her love and friendship with each prince, Ruo Xi struggles to take control of her own heart and destiny in the Forbidden City, where every step could be a matter of life and death..

South and North Korea are on the verge of reunification, and the best way to celebrate this momentous occasion is the re-opening of the Gyunghuiseon Line. But Japan, claiming ownership of the line, interrupts the festivities with a contract signed by the last Joseon Emperor, Gojong, a move which drives both Koreas into a crisis.

No man has influenced Korean commercial cinema in the last decade like Director Kang Woo Suk. When he formed a small film company in 1993, nobody expected Cinema Service to become one of the most important names in Chungmuro. But Kang is not simply a mega-producer, he’s also a talented director with a knack for finding the right theme at the right time. With Two Cops in 1993 he brought commercial filmmaking back from the abyss of the early 90s, and then in 2003, a little film called Silmido became the first ever Korean production to sell more than 10 million tickets.

Kang’s new film Hanbando follows the same path as his previous films: it’s very controversial and it’s a big spectacle. The huge cast is highlighted with experienced actors, including Ahn Sung Ki (Musa, Duelist) as the Korean President, Moon Sung Keun (Princess Aurora) as the skeptical Prime Minister, and finally Cha In Pyo (Hong Kong Express) and Cho Jae Hyun (Bad Guy, Piano) as the agents trying to get to the truth. The 10 billion won blockbuster Hanbando polarized viewers because of its strong political themes, and drew close to 4 million people to the theaters. Now is your chance to see what caused all that fuss..
