TV producer An Pan Seok makes his big screen, directorial debut with this gentle drama about a North Korean couple and their efforts to stay together and emigrate to the South.

Cha Seung Won (The Big Scene, Blood Rain) stars as Seon Ho, a horn player for Pyongyang’s state propaganda band who lives an affluent and privileged life in sharp contrast to many of his fellow North Koreans. He is from a good family and has a beautiful fiancee, museum guide Yeon Hwa (Jo Yi Jin from The Aggressives). However, when it is revealed that Seon Ho’s grandfather is not the dead, revered Communist hero that everybody thought he was, but is in fact living in exile in Seoul, the family is forced to flee to the South. Seon Ho is unable to take his beloved Yeon Hwa with him, and so begins his struggle to bring her across the border to join him.

The film has been praised for its realistic portrayal of life, not only in North Korea, but also as an immigrant in Seoul. Over The Border plays as both an informative expose into this oft-neglected angle of the North/South divide, as well as a romantic melodrama of two lovers torn apart by powers beyond their control. The film won for Best Supporting Actress (Shim Hye Jin) and Best New Actress (Jo Yi Jin) at the 44th Daejong Film Awards.

Korea’s remake of the 2007 Hong Kong police thriller Eye in the Sky, Cold Eyes transplants the intense battle of wits and surveillance to the streets of Seoul. Sol Kyung Gu and Jung Woo Sung step into the opposing roles originally played by Simon Yam and Tony Leung Ka Fai a grisly surveillance unit leader and a coldly meticulous criminal mastermind. Also on the police surveillance team are Han Hyo Ju as the impulsive greenhorn and 2PM member Lee Jun Ho in his film debut. After taking an on-site test, Yoon Joo (Han Hyo Ju) becomes the newest member of the police surveillance unit led by veteran Detective Hwang (Sol Kyung Gu). Through tracking devices and good old legwork, the unit’s task is to gather intel for other teams by finding, following and observing suspects, but never engaging. While Yoon Joo’s taking her test, elsewhere in town a bank robbery occurs in broad daylight. The entire job is orchestrated down to the last second by the leader of the group, James (Jung Woo Sung), who observes from a nearby rooftop and allows no mistakes.

Detective Hwang and his team begin combing the area for the bank robbers, gradually narrowing the field and closing in on the suspects. James, however, catches scent of the police and stays one ruthless step ahead, escalating the cat-and-mouse game to life and death stakes..

Returning to a period role after her breakout success in the 2010 historical TV drama Dong Yi, Han Hyo Ju plays the Queen caught between the real and fake kings. Ryu Seung Ryong (War of the Arrows), Kim In Kwon (The Tower) and teen actress Shim Eun Kyung (Sunny) also give notable supporting performances in Masquerade. At the helm is director Choo Chang Min, whose previous Late Blossom turned into a sleeper hit in 2011.
