They’ve been defeated by fighter jets, Marines, and even cowboys – now, it’s the ninjas’ turn to take on alien enemies in the gory action/sci-fi film Alien Vs. Ninjas. The Chiba Seiji film is the latest production from Nikkatsu’s Sushi Typhoon label, which produces low-budget genre films that defies the boundaries of censorship and good taste. As the title explicitly says, AVN pits a powerful ninja warrior clan called the Iga who stumbles across a fireball from the sky. Instead of finding a weapon from their rival clan, they’re attacked by slimy creatures from outer space. After a bloody massacre that takes out most of the Igas, the few surviving members of the clan unite and come up with a few clever tricks to defeat their mysterious enemies..

Since the success of Confession, author Minato Kanae’s literary works have become very popular among film and television writers due to her dark, twisted views of human nature. The latest Minato work to arrive on the big screen is the short story “Ni-jyu Nian Go no Shyukudai” from the anthology Oufuku Shokan, about a librarian who returns to the small northern town she once worked in as a teacher to visit her old students. A Chorus of Angels stars timeless acting legend Yoshinaga Sayuri as the teacher, and her now-adult students are played by a cast of talented young actors, including Miyazaki Aoi (In His Chart), Mitsushima Hikari (Love Exposure), Koike Eiko (Penance), Mirai Moriyama (The Drudgery Train) and Matsuda Ryuhei (Phone Call to the Bar). The adaptation by director Sakamoto Junji (Children of the Dark, Zatoichi The Last) features gorgeous landscapes of snowy Hokkaido shot by veteran cinematographer Kimura Daisuku and was one of top nominees at the Japan Academy Prize.

Haru (Yoshinaga Sayuri) was a junior high school teacher in a remote island town in Hokkaido. After an accident that killed one of her students, Haru moved to Tokyo and became a librarian. Twenty years later, Haru finds a photo album from those days and decides to pay a visit to the town. She discovers that her old students, who are now in their late 20s, are still living in town. The students still resent Haru for abandoning them, opening up old wounds that will reveal the truth behind what happened twenty years ago..

You can run from your crimes, but you can never escape the watchful eyes of Detective Kaga Kyoichiro. After the popular television adaptations of Shinzanmono and Akai Yubi, the inquisitive crime fighter from Higashino Keigo’s popular novel series now hits the big screen with Wings of the Kirin. In his latest case, the stern crime solver must dig out the truth in a seemingly open-and-shut case involving a stabbing at the famous Nihonbashi. After his popular turn as Kaga on the two previous television adaptations, Abe Hiroshi plays the brilliant detective for the third time in Kirin. In addition to the return of regulars Mizobata Junpei (as Kaga’s cousin/partner), Kuroki Meisa (as a local reporter), and Yamazaki Tsutomu (as Kaga’s ailing father), Abe is also joined by a new supporting cast that includes Aragaki Yui (Hanamizuki), Tanaka Rena (The Tale of Genji), and Nakai Kiichi (Once in a Blue Moon).

Kaga Kyoichiro (Abe Hiroshi) is brought in to investigate a case of a salaryman (Nakai Kiichi) found dead on Tokyo’s Nihonbashi. After the man’s co-worker was found hit by a truck after fleeing the crime scene, the police think that they have an open-and-shut case on their hands. However, the ever-observant Kaga thinks that there’s more to what’s on the surface and begins to investigate deeper, from the dead man’s son to the suspect’s girlfriend (Aragaki Yui). Follow the clues and see if you can keep up with the brilliant mind of Detective Kaga..

In the tradition of hit comedies like Swing Girls and Hula Girls, director Inomata Ryuichi (A Tale of Mari and Three Puppies) offers his own take on the formula with Shodo Girls! Watashitachi no Koshien. Loosely based on real events, the film follows a group of high school girls who excel in the unlikeliest of competition activities: calligraphy. This isn’t your grandfather’s style of calligraphy, though; the competitive version of the activity involves a much larger canvas, with a team needing to unite and fill the paper canvas using large paintbrushes. Narumi Riko (Shindo) leads a cast of talented fellow young actresses in this inspiring tale about overcoming hardships, the true importance of teamwork, and finding passion in doing what you love.

Satoko (Narumi Riko) is the granddaughter of a calligraphy master living in a run-down factory town. A talented calligrapher in her own right, she’s only interested in getting the individual prize in the annual inter-school calligraphy tournament rather than getting the glory for her school with the fellow members of the school club. That all changes with the arrival of the club’s new advisor Ikezawa (Kaneko Nobuaki), who comes up with the idea of turning calligraphy into performance. Initially disgusted by the idea, Satoko is eventually inspired by Ikezawa and her club mates, especially Kiyomi (Takahata Mitsuki), who wants to use the new calligraphy style to revive her family’s stationary shop.

Director Sono Sion (Love Exposure) unleashes a blood-soaked tribute to cinema, passion, yakuza and 35mm film with Why Don’t You Play in Hell. One of the cult director’s most purely “fun” films of his career, this dark comedy is a hilariously over-the-top saga about a yakuza boss determined to give his daughter an acting career, a rival yakuza boss out for revenge, a group of filmmakers in pursuit of the film dream and the innocent man caught in the middle. Winner of the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Why Don’t You Play in Hell is a wild ride from a provocative filmmaker who knows how to shock and delight his audience at the same time.

Ten years ago, the wife of Muto (Kunimura Jun) goes on a gangland massacre that lands on the newspaper headlines, effectively ending her young daughter’s acting career. To celebrate his wife’s impending release from prison, Muto is determined to revive his daughter Michiko’s (Nikaido Fumi) acting career by giving her a starring role in a film. However, Michiko has fled the production to hunt down her ex-boyfriend and has dragged innocent bystander Koji (Hoshino Gen) along with her. Meanwhile, Ikegami (Tsutsumi Shinichi), Muto’s rival and the sole survivor of the massacre ten years ago, is back and ready to take his revenge. At the same time, a group of passionate filmmakers who filmed the injured Ikegami ten years ago are about to have a chance to make their dream come true by filming the real massacre about to take place between Muto and Ikegami..

Director Kore-eda Hirokazu (Nobody Knows) subverts the samurai film genre with Hana Yori mo Naho (a.k.a. Hana). The film stars Okada Junichi of pop group V6 as Sozaemon, a samurai who journeys from Matsumoto to Edo with the tried-and-true goal of avenging his father’s death. Sozaemon may have revenge as a goal, but his days are filled in a less intense manner. He resides in a broken down tenement with a menagerie of lower class folk, and spends his time teaching the neighborhood children, relaxing with his friends, and even romancing a beautiful widow (Miyazawa Rie). Life is good for Sozaemon.

However, trouble soon finds him in the form of local toughs and even other samurai. But Sozaemon’s way of dealing with conflict is unexpected, to say the least. When danger approaches, Sozaemon either gets whupped by the opposition, or even runs away! When his father’s killer (Asano Tadanobu) finally makes his presence known, Sozaemon must fulfill his duty as a samurai, and either exact revenge or die an honorable death. The stage is set for an iconic samurai showdown…but is the way of the samurai really the way for Sozaemon?.
