A monumental achievement in the world of Japanese animation, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is considered by many to be Miyazaki Hayao’s masterpiece. With the coexistence of humans and nature as its central theme, this fantastic tale is a sobering vision of what could be our own future. After an apocalyptic war known as the “Seven Days of Fire,” the civilizations that humans had prized so highly have been obliterated. One thousand years after the war, the remnants of humanity eke out their existence in a small area of land, threatened on all sides by the “Sea of Corruption,” a vast forest of fungi and insects.

One evening, a gigantic transport vessel hailing from the Kingdom of Torumekia crashes into the Valley of the Wind – a small pocket of land protected by ocean breezes from the deadly “miasma” gas that blows across the land. The people of the valley, under the direction of Princess Nausicaa, work to clean up the wreckage of the vessel, and in its remains they discover the devastating weapon used to decimate humanity in the ancient war. Soon, the valley is attacked by Kushana, princess of Torumekia, and its inhabitants unwillingly become entangled in a war between Torumekia and the city of Pejite….

Lily Franky’s bestselling novel Tokyo Tower – Mom & Me, and Sometimes Dad has already spawned a drama special, a TV series, and a 2007 feature film starring Odagiri Joe. As the title suggests, the story focuses on a touching mother-son relationship amidst the lights of 1970s Tokyo. Without bells or whistles, Lily Franky’s autobiography has sold over two million copies in Japan on the force of its nostalgic, heart-tugging story, and the film directed by Matsuoka Joji (Sayonara, Kuro) has found similar success at the Japanese box office. Acclaimed actor Odagiri Joe (Yureru), in a markedly restrained performance, stars as the son, alongside real-life mother-and-daughter actresses Kiki Kirin and Uchida Yayako, who play the mother in her young and elder years. The film also co-stars popular actress Matsu Takako (The Hidden Blade) and veteran actor Kobayashi Kaoru, and features a long line-up of unassuming celebrity cameos. Touching a common chord with both critics and moviegoers, Tokyo Tower – Mom & Me, and Sometimes Dad has received 14 nominations at the 31st Japan Academy Awards, nods in every possible category.

After moving from the coal mining town of Fukuoka to Tokyo to study art, Masaya (Odagiri Joe) finds himself fumbling in life, unable to set a direction for himself. Lost in the bright lights of the big city, he struggles to make a living. Everything changes one day when he finds out that his mother has been diagnosed with cancer….

Following the critical and commercial success of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars, Hosoda Mamoru has been named one of the brightest hopes for the future of Japanese animation. Three years after Summer Wars, Hosoda raises the bar again with Wolf Children. An original story co-created by Hosoda and frequent screenwriter Okudera Satoko, Wolf Children is a unique blend of fantasy romance and domestic drama, following the journey of a woman who falls in love with a wolfman and ends up raising two human-wolf hybrid children on her own. In a risky move, Hosoda eschews the adventure element of his two previous films, telling a gentle story about learning to let go and the sacrifices of parenthood. However, Hosoda’s risk paid off, and Wolf Children became the highest-grossing film of Hosoda’s career and one of the highest-grossing domestic films of 2012.

Hana (voiced by Miyazaki Aoi) is an ordinary university student. One day, she experiences love at first sight with a young man (voiced by Osawa Takao) who periodically sneaks into her class. The two soon fall in love, and Hana discovers that he is actually a wolfman. However, Hana accepts the wolfman for who he is, and the two eventually have two children: Yuki and Ame. Due to their wolf-like qualities, Hana decides to keep her children at home to avoid attention from others. When the wolfman suddenly passes away, Hana is forced to care for the children on her own. Realizing the difficulties of raising two half-wolf children in the city, Hana moves to the countryside and discovers the peaceful haven her family desperately needs.

This edition comes with a bonus DVD containing stage events, television programs on the making of the film and trailers..

Initially an auteur of men-on-the-run films, Japanese director SABU has been branching out to other genres in recent years with Kanikosen and his latest film Bunny Drop. Based on the first half of the ongoing manga series by Unida Yumi, Bunny Drop is a gentle comedy-drama about a single 30-year-old white-collar worker who suddenly becomes a father figure to his late grandfather’s six-year-old illegitimate daughter.
