Famous for his villainous roles in some early Stephen Chow movies, Hong Kong actor Ching Tung makes his directorial debut with Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu, an entertaining tale about the influential school of martial arts originated in southern China. He has lined up a formidable cast for the film, including Hong Kong actors Michelle Ye, Kara Hui, Norman Tsui, and Stephen Chow’s frequent co-stars Ng Man Tat, Wong Yat Fei, Wong Yat San, and Kingdom Yuen. But the action comedy is indeed built as a starring vehicle for popular Mainland actor Wang Baoqiang (Mr. Tree), who is well on his way to A-list status following his eye-catching appearances in films like Fire of Conscience and Romancing in Thin Air.

Having learned real Shaolin kung fu as a kid, Wang seems the perfect choice for the protagonist Danny Chen, an innocent young man who goes back to China from the US to succeed to his father’s (Ng Man Tat) Choy Lee Fut martial school. At the airport, Danny mistakes the gorgeous Jing (Michelle Ye) for the thief that stole his cell phone and luggage, and in the resulting scuffle he is no match for Jing’s friend Canglong (former child actor Xie Miao). Back home, the Chen family’s butler (Wong Yat Fei) has been secretly plotting to take over their martial school, and Danny’s return becomes his biggest obstacle. With the martial school at stake, it is up to Danny to master the Choy Lee Fut kung fu and defend its reputation in the boxing championship!.

One of the first cinematic adaptations of the Chinese folklore The Wandering Dragon Seduces the Phoenix, Li Han Hsiang’s The Kingdom and the Beauty is one of the most successful films in 1960s Hong Kong and one of the best-known films from the Shaw Brothers Studio. Starring screen legend Lam Doi and Chao Lei, the grand old-fashioned melodrama is a take on the classical tale about an emperor who wanders out to the real world and meets the true love of his life. Boasting an emotional story, vivid production design, and great acting, The Kingdom and the Beauty won Best Picture at the sixth Asia Pacific Film Festival, and it’s also named one of the best 100 Chinese-language films ever made by the Hong Kong Film Awards. Digitally remastered, there is no better time to experience this Hong Kong cinema classic.

Bored by his life in the palace, the Emperor (Chao Lei) decides to escape to the real world with a homebound guard. There, he finds love at first sight with local waitress Li Feng (Lam Doi). After a period of courting, the two fall in love in spite of warnings by Li Feng’s friend Ta Niu (legendary director King Hu). Gamera just enjoyed his 40th anniversary last year, and what better way to celebrate its longevity than another movie! Saving the world since 1965, the giant flying turtle returns to the big screen once more in Gamera the Brave. In the grand tradition of Japanese kaiju, this time Gamera will be facing off against another rival, an enormous people-eating sea monster with sharp teeth and claws and a deadly tongue. The latest Gamera flick will be more grounded in the real world, albeit a real world populated by giant monsters. Directed by Tazaki Ryuta (the Masked Rider films), Gamera the Brave features plenty of exciting monster action set against a touching story about a young boy’s relationships with his father and his monster pet.

Quiet 11-year-old Toru (Ryo Tomioka) lives in the seaside town of Ishema with his father Kousuke (Kanji Tsuda). Ever since the death of Toru’s mother, father and son have had a distant relationship. One day Toru finds a baby turtle at the beach. Toru names the turtle Toto, and takes it in as a secret pet. It soon becomes clear, however, that the fast-growing Toto is no ordinary turtle as it can fly and breathe little balls of fire. Much to Toru’s dismay, Toto eventually flies away, and soon afterwards, a giant sea monster attacks the town. As the monster closes in on Toru and his friends, a giant turtle comes to their rescue, just like the legendary Gamera did many years ago. Toru realizes that the new Gamera is none other Toto..

Two of Hong Kong Cinema’s favorite obsessions – ghosts and gambling – come together in You Bet Your Life (1989). Producer Jeffrey Lau (A Chinese Tall Story), the region’s most acclaimed comedic filmmaker this side of Stephen Chow, has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to tickling audience’s funnybones; this genre-bending crowd-pleaser beat Sammo Hung’s own supernatural card shark comedy, The Gambling Ghost, to the punch by a full two years. Starring Sandra Ng (All’s Well Ends Well) and sometimes-actor Lowell Lo (who earns his real living composing the musical scores for films like A Chinese Odyssey and Shaolin Soccer), as a money-hungry couple who enlist otherworldly powers to help them win big at the casino, You Bet Your Life truly captures the zeitgeist of the cinematic times.

Mr. and Mrs. Luo love to gamble, even though they’ve yet to win any actual money. When a smarmy acquaintance suddenly enjoys an incredible winning streak, the couple resolves to discover the secret of his success. It turns out a hungry ghost is rigging the games in exchange for the man’s life force, a prospect the Luos find more tempting than terrifying. Never ones to shy away from a bet, the Luos promptly summon a wandering female spirit and cut a deal of their own. The proposition: the Luos will never lose a game, but if they can’t spend their winnings in a single day, one of them dies!.
