Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid gets reinterpreted for Chinese audiences in Kao Li’s The Mermaid, a fun-filled Shaw Brothers produced, Huangmei opera. Released in 1964, this mythical tale centers on a scholar named Zhang Zhen (Ivy Ling Po) who finds himself taken in by a high official (Yang Chi Ching) after the death of his beloved parents. Soon enough, Zhang Zhen falls in love with his benefactor’s attractive, but haughty daughter, Peony (Li Ching). However, there are two problems preventing a union between the two. For one, her father simply won’t approve of the match, and even more importantly, Peony has no interest in Zhang as a suitor to begin with!

Stuck inside with nothing to do but study for exams, Zhang tries to brighten his spirits by feeding fish in a nearby pond. On one fateful day, a carp transforms itself into a beautiful woman (also played by Li Ching) who just so happens to resemble Peony! Plenty of misunderstandings and misadventures ensue when this lovely Carp Spirit tries to adapt to life on the surface! Who will Zhang choose – his first love, Peony or the vivacious mermaid? Winner of three awards at the 12th Asian Film Festival, including Best Actress (Li Ching), Most Versatile Talent Award (Ivy Ling Po), and Best Sound Recording (Wang Yung Hua), The Mermaid is a fine showcase for actresses Ivy Ling Po in yet another gender bending performance and “Baby Queen” Li Ching, who takes on dual roles! As far as Huangmei opera pictures are concerned, The Mermaid is one Shaw Brothers production full of lighthearted fun!.

Directed by legendary filmmaker Chang Cheh with action choreography by Lau Ka Leung and Tong Gai, this internationally successful film launched the career of Jimmy Wang Yu, who portrays the iconic title character. When the Golden Sword School finds itself under siege, it is up to a faithful disciple (Guk Fung) to put his life on the line to protect both his master and his fellow students. Tragically, the brave hero is killed in the process, but before he dies, he passes on his precious Broken Sword and convinces Master Qi Rufeng (Ting Fung) to accept his son Fang Gang as his own. The film then flashes forward to follow the adventures of a now grown-up Fang (Jimmy Wang Yu), who has become the top student at the martial arts school. Even so, he is hated by his jealous classmates. One snowy evening, a dejected Fang meets up with a group of students led by the master’s spoiled daughter (Pan Yin Tze). When Fang refuses to fight her, the daughter becomes enraged and chops off his arm!

Miraculously, Fang escapes with his life and crosses paths with a pretty country girl named Hsiao Man (Chiao Chiao). She plays nursemaid to the fallen hero and eventually shares her father’s half-burned kung fu manual with him as well. With renewed determination, Fang Gang adapts to his handicap, becoming a formidable warrior in his own right. But his newfound mastery of martial arts is challenged when he discovers that the Golden Sword School is once again under attack by the same villains who murdered Fang Gang’s father! Will he return to the school to defend it as his father did before him? Or will he retire from the world of martial arts as he promised Hsiao Man? Watch and learn in this classic Shaw Brothers film, which spawned two official sequels, several similar spin-offs, the international team-up picture, Zatoichi Meets the One-Armed Swordsman, and the unofficial sequel One-Armed Swordsmen!.

Returning with his first full-length film since 2005’s Seven Swords, Hong Kong Cinema master Tsui Hark writes, produces, and directs the genre-arching supernatural drama Missing. Popular actress Angelica Lee (The Eye) sees ghosts again in this eerie effort which offers its share of scares, but is by no means a horror film in the traditional sense. Co-starring up-and-coming actress Isabella Leong (Isabella), Guo Xiaodong from An Empress and the Warriors, and arthouse favorite Chang Chen (Red Cliff), Missing combines supernatural, psychodrama, and romance elements in a less than predictable manner to tell an uncommon story of life, love, and death. The film also features beautiful underwater photography, and supporting performances from Tony Leung Ka Fai and Taiwan rock singer A-yue Chang.

A scuba diving trip turns into a nightmare when psychiatrist Gao Jing (Angelica Lee) and her boyfriend Guo Dong (Guo Xiaodong) meet tragedy at sea. Suffering from memory loss after the incident, Gao Jing can’t remember what exactly happened in the ocean that day, and all that is recovered of Guo Dong is a headless corpse. Upset that Gao Jing is going ahead with the funeral, Guo Dong’s sister Xiao Kai (Isabella Leong) angrily sets out to find her brother’s head. Gao Jing looks for closure through therapy but only ends up with more questions and heartache. When her patient Simon (Chang Chen) claims that he can see Guo Dong’s ghost, Gao Jing seeks his guidance to open her eyes and mind to the other side. Soon she’s seeing visitors of all sorts, but no Guo Dong. At this time, a strangely eerie Xiao Kai suddenly returns to Hong Kong with her brother’s head. But is it really Guo Dong’s head that Xiao Kai has brought back?.

Taking four years to produce, the big-budget 3D sports movie Mr. Go tells the unlikely story of a circus-trained gorilla from China that follows its owner to South Korea to play for a baseball team. To create its hero, the China-Korea co-production employed cutting-edge visual technology and a 180-person animation team comparable to that of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and King Kong. Based on the Hur Young Man comic The 7th Team, Mr. Go is directed by Kim Yong Hwa (200 Pounds Beauty) and stars Chinese actress Xu Jiao (CJ7) and Korean actors Kim Kang Woo (The Taste of Money) and Sung Dong Il (The Grand Heist).

To repay her late grandfather’s debt and save her children’s circus troupe, ringmaster Wei Wei (Xu Jiao) accepts a golden baseball agent’s invitation to join a baseball team in South Korea with her longtime pal homerun-hitting gorilla Ling Ling. Thanks to its long trained circus skills, the ape, dubbed “Mr. Go,” takes the South Korean baseball scene by storm and immediately becomes a fan and media favorite. The first film produced by Zhang, the Hollywood-style urban romantic comedy embraces the genre with heartwarming cinematic gusto, throwing beautiful people in beautiful places into hapless Bridget Jones-style dilemmas. Fan Bingbing (Shinjuku Incident) does a bit of image debunking herself as Zhang’s gorgeous and manipulative onscreen nemesis. Competing for the hands of the leading ladies are two of Asia’s biggest heartthrobs, Korean star So Ji Sub (Rough Cut) and Taiwan actor Peter Ho (My DNA Says I Love You). Ruby Lin (Princess Returning Pearl) and Yao Chen (All’s Well Ends Well 2009) take supporting roles as Zhang’s scheming buddies. These are the legendary films that created the era of heroic bloodshed. Propelling the Hong Kong box office sales to a record high in 1986, John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow won Best Picture and Best Actor trophies at the 6th Hong Kong Film Awards. It was also selected by local critics and film makers as the best of the Best 100 Movies Ever in Hong Kong film history. The success of the blood and bullet movie ended the dominance of Sammo Hung and Jacky Chan’s action comedies in the 80s and played a significant role in shaping the development of Hong Kong films.

A Better Tomorrow (1986)
As essential a Hong Kong film as you could ever find, A Better Tomorrow, is a milestone of Hong Kong Cinema, and the first true John Woo film from legendary director John Woo. Ho (Ti Lung) and Mark (Chow Yun-Fat) are triad brothers at the top of their game, but each suffers a stunning fall from grace. Ho is betrayed and sent to prison, much to the shame of his brother, police cadet Kit (Leslie Cheung). Mark is crippled during a bloody hit on a rival gang leader, leaving him a shell of a man. Years later the two are reunited, but the world has changed around them. Now at the mercy of their former comrades in the triad, the two form an uneasy alliance with Kit to strike back…with a hailstorm of bullets.

A Better Tomorrow II (1987)
Director John Woo outdoes his hyperkinetic gunplay from the first film, as he reunites Ti Lung, Leslie Cheung, and even Chow Yun Fat for this entertaining and dramatic sequel to one of the most popular Hong Kong films ever. When we last left our heroes, Ho (Ti Lung) was thrown in jail for his triad activities, but the courts grant him lenience for his righteousness. He’s released to infiltrate the gang of suspected bad guy Lung (Dean Shek), who’s currently being investigated by Ho’s brother Kit (Leslie Cheung). But circumstances go sour, and Ho turns to an unlikely ally: former killer Ken, who’s the twin brother of Chow Yun Fat from the first Better Tomorrow!

A Better Tomorrow III (1989)
Producer Tsui Hark takes the directing reins from John Woo for the third and final film in the A Better Tomorrow trilogy. A Better Tomorrow III is a prequel to the earlier films, and features the return of Mark, the suave, righteous killer made popular by actor Chow Yun Fat in the original A Better Tomorrow. Still young and without the seasoning which would make him one of the triad underworld’s most fearsome killers, Mark journeys to 1974 Saigon, where he hooks up with tough-as-nails gangster Anita Mui. She teaches him the way of the gun, but her former flame doesn’t take kindly to Chow’s presence around his ex-girlfriend. Making matters worse is a love triangle involving Chow’s cousin Tony Leung Ka Fai, and the approaching fall of Saigon. Tsui Hark serves up slow-motion bullet ballet and wrenching melodrama in classic Better Tomorrow tradition, whi.
