Five youths come of age the hard way in the Taiwanese gangster blockbuster Monga. Beating even Avatar at the local box office in its opening day gross, the youth gang epic takes audiences back to 1980s Taiwan, to a time of rousing fistfights, loud floral shirts, and good old-fashioned brotherhood. Following his award-winning What on Earth Have I Done Wrong, Doze Niu spins his experience as an idol drama director into a big-budget, hot-blooded gangster actioner that’s gritty, glossy, and completely entertaining. Television idols Ethan Ruan (Exit No. 6) and Mark Chao (Black & White) lead the cast, with Rhydian Vaughn (Winds of September), former Super Idol contestant Cai Chang Xian, variety show stars Huang Deng Hui and Chen Han Dian, and actress Alice Ke (Miao Miao) rounding out Monga‘s awry youth. Veteran actor Ma Ju Lung (Cape No. 7) and Doze Niu himself also co-star in the nostalgic gangland drama.

Loner teen Mosquito (Mark Chao) has just moved to Taipei’s gang-ridden Monga district, and he gets picked out immediately at school for some roughing up. Dragon (Rhydian Vaughan), the swaggering son of mob boss Geta (Ma Ju Lung), swoops in to save Mosquito and invites him into the “Prince Gang” alongside Monkey (Cai Chang Xian), A-Po (Huang Deng Hui), and Monk (Ethan Ruan), the true brain and brawn of the group. The five friends live it up together amid backalley brawls and brothel excursions, even as they get pulled deeper and deeper into a brewing gang war that threatens to upturn their youth and their brotherhood.

Liu Ye, Zhang Hanyu and Huang Bo are the eponymous heroes of The Chef, The Actor, The Scoundrel, a wartime comedy-drama from director Guan Hu (Cow). Set during the Sino-Japanese War in a Beijing ravaged by war, famine and plague, the film takes place mostly in an inn with four everyday folks and their two Japanese captives. The entertaining, shape-shifting story of comedy and espionage gradually reveals a labyrinthine battle of wits and masquerade among various parties with divergent motives and secrets.

A desperate Scoundrel (Huang Bo) tries to rob two Japanese travelers, but a Chef (Liu Ye) captures them first and holds them hostage in his Japanese restaurant. The Chef, his mute wife (Liang Jing, Design of Death), the Scoundrel and a rakish opera Actor (Zhang Hanyu) who works at the restaurant argue over what to do with the captives. When they learn the captives are actually scientists who have developed a vaccine for cholera, they agree to steal the vaccine formula and then sell it off for big money. Making the scientists spill their secrets, however, is easier said than done, especially when they also have to hide the captives from the Japanese army and some suspicious detectives. Meanwhile, the Chef, the Actor and the Scoundrel also may not be who they appear to be..

After the popular success of 72 Tenants of Prosperity last year, Shaw Brothers brings back its winning formula and a crowded cast for another Lunar New Year holiday crowd-pleaser. Led by star, producer, and co-director Eric Tsang, I Love Hong Kong boasts a massive cast toplined by Tony Leung Ka Fai, Sandra Ng, Anita Yuen, Stanley Fung, Aarif Lee, Fala Chen, Bosco Wong, Wong Cho Lam, and a seemingly endless supply of TVB actors and pop singers. Unlike other major Hong Kong films today, I Love Hong Kong is a wholly homegrown production with a story filled with distinctively local-flavored humor and issues of concern to Hong Kong’s grassroots class. However, the feel-good family laughfest’s all-star appeal and festive atmosphere are surely universally appreciated, as is the traditional neighborhood spirit it champions, which can only be found in a close-knit community like the public housing estate this story takes place in.

Going bankrupt following the failure of his Mainland toy factory in the global financial crisis, Ng Shun (Tony Leung Ka Fai) has no choice but to bring his family back to the cheap public housing estate he left more than ten years ago. Shun has a lot of fond memory of the place he grew up in, but it proves hard for his wife (Sandra Ng), son (Aarif Lee), and daughters to settle down in grandpa’s (Stanley Fung) tiny apartment, forcing the family to face the problems they have long neglected. Meanwhile, Shun’s childhood buddy Lung (Eric Tsang), who conned a large sum of money from his neighbors many years ago, suddenly shows up again in the estate with a plan that allegedly will make their estate lively and vibrant like in the good old days….

Director Zhang Yang follows up the wildly popular Spicy Love Soup with Shower, a funny and disarmingly real portrait of a family and their traditional bathhouse. Da Ming (He Zheng) is an avowed urban professional who returns home to Beijing when he receives news that leads him to believe his father has passed away. But dad (Zhu Xu) is alive, and still running the family bathhouse with Da Ming’s mentally-challenged brother Er Ming (Jiang Wu). Da Ming immediately tries to return to his work, but within a matter of days, he begins to discover just what’s lacking from his relationship with his family. Disparate values, cultures, generations, and experiences separate the three men, and soon he discovers that many possibilities – and even the hope of reconciliation – can be found at the bathhouse, which is a place where life and community can be found almost everyday. Director Zhang Yang uses everyday details of the Beijing bathhouse to create a charming film filled with real characters facing real situations. A hit worldwide at various film festivals, Shower is a generously funny and heartwarmingly human motion picture..
